Classroom of the Elite

Hey guys, welcome to my third blog. In this blog, we will talk about the next three episodes of the Anime in terms of the course. Given the lack of time for an Anime, it tried to cover the Novel as much as possible.  I would like to say that these three episodes(4th,5th, and 6th) were very loyal to the Novel compared to the first three episodes.   I say this based on the following events: Small facts like the fight between Sudou and three class C students that took place in the Special Building. The whole scene where Ayanokouji helps Ichinose with the confession she received was exactly the same as described in the Light Novel. The scenario where Ayanokouji, Kushida, and Sakura goes to a mall for camera repair and the events that occur there was precisely the same as in the Novel. The POV of the Novel is neither Omniscient nor Omnipresent as the main character himself talks in the first person whereas, in Anime, we can say that the camera is Omnipresent

Violet Evergarden (Part 1)

Image
Hey guys, this week I will be covering the anime adaptation of the light novel called Violet Evergarden. The movie is also called Violet Evergarden. It is a story about an ex-female soldier who takes up the job of an Auto Memory Doll at a Writer's agency The anime has 13 episodes in total whereas the light novel contains 6 chapters. For this post I will be covering 4 episodes from the anime and 2 chapters of the light novel. If we judge the adaptation based in fidelity from the light novel, then the adaptation is not so loyal to the novel. The anime shows the life of Violet Evergarden  in the order of succession. This shows the rise of Violet into a well reputed Auto Memory Doll. Whereas the novel starts in the middle, go back to the beginning and then go to the end. This sets a mystery towards the protagonist as her story is not completely clear until one point. This puts up an anachrony. The focalization in the anime is variable because Violet Evergarden's perspectives are

Hey guys. I welcome you all to the second Blog of my assignment. Here I am going to discuss intertextuality and Anime's aesthetics. Intertextuality - Adaptation with multiple source texts. Every episode starts with a quote that was taken from other sources as these quotes are nowhere to be seen in the Light Novel. For example, The first aesthetic we are going to talk about in the adaptation n is the Anime's visuals, to tell you, in short, Marvellous. The Anime was released in 2017, were in the Anime Industry has grown very much compared to the one released in 2000. Coming to the audio, I just love the opening and closing songs of this Anime, and I never miss them, which was not the case with other Animes I have watched. Some special effects such as: Camera angles while closing the door and opening the bag zip.     The non-diegetic sound of a bell at the start of every episode. The intense background music when there is a turning point or some interesting fact is revealed. All

Overlord: The Undead King- The End and The Beginning

Image
This blog discusses the first episode of season one of Overlord , covering one and a half chapters in volume one, which will be discussed in this post. The episode starts with several players facing off a horde of undead skeletons at the entrance- a non-diegetic clip hinting at the 1500-player raid on the Great Tomb Of Nazarick, which was recounted many times by Momonga in the Amphitheatrum and the Throne Room(in the light novel)- this was also an excellent use of analepsis in the narrative.  Coming to the story, most of the locations in the Great Tomb Of Nazarick are identical to the ones in the real world. The most striking intertextual reference is the antehall known as Lemegeton, named after The Lesser Key Of Solomon or Lemegeton , a grimoire on demonology; the hall consisted of 67 golems inside the alcoves based on Solomon's 72 demons. I appreciate the depiction of the Throne Hall based on Neuschwanstein Castle though, the throne room and the singer's hall of the real one

Overlord

Image
Overlord currently has three seasons totalling thirty-nine episodes(thirteen per season), covering nine volumes of light novels; it also has a manga that gets updated infrequently (I won't be mentioning it much; just for reference). The chapters in every volume correspond to an episode with the same name. I shall be covering as much as possible in a series of blogs systematically split into chapters and their corresponding episodes. In this blog, I will be discussing Overlord in general. The anime adaptation is quite faithful to the light novel in terms of fidelity. Although they miss out on some main aspects that I deem necessary, the anime adaptation did very well in the picturisation of the light novel that would set the viewer to visualise the world, making it better for reading the light novels(especially for the volumes beyond the anime). For example, the title is not explained or even talked about in the anime. Many anime-only watchers may only associate the title to only

Sword Art Online (Part 1)

Image
Sword Art Online  is a  phenomenal Japanese Novel Series  (first published in 2009) written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by Abec, which opened up a whole new genre of 'Gaming' to the worlds of 'Light Novel' and 'Anime'. This novel series was later adapted as a manga, as well as an Anime in 2012. The series takes place in a futuristic world, where Virtual Reality MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Players Game) exists and revolves around the protagonist Kazuto "Kirito" and Asuna they play in VR MMORPG Worlds. The novel series and the adaptation gained a lot of popularity thanks to the hard-core gaming and a tech-based adventure story whose depiction was appropriated to match gaming's present trends, thus attracting a broad audience. Both the light novel and the Anime bring out the imagination of the viewers/readers on the concepts of virtual setting like virtual gaming world, etc. In the Light Novel, we get a clearer perspective on the work

Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name)

Image
This post tries to analyse the light novel Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) and the anime film adaptation of it. The novel was released in 2016 and was adapted into a film 2017 by the same author Makoto Shinkai. The cinematic adaptation loyally follows the light novel with very minute modifications. By going through both of them it is evident that the novel was given primacy and hence fidelity is shown One of the key differences is that the point of view in the light novel is first person with respect to two of the protagonists Taki and Mitsuha whereas it is third person in the movie. The picturization of the characters was lacking in the light novel whereas the movie tried to express the character of the people in it through various visual effects. The film uses a different focalization compared to the novel.  The focalization in the film is external with no narration under the perspective of any character, but the light novel's focalization is fixed to the protagonist Mitsuha One fideli

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Image
Fate/Stay Night is a popular visual novel(or game) released in 2004. It consisted of three routes which all follow a similar line of plot: there are magicians called Masters who control beings called Servants and fight each other to obtain the Holy Grail, which can grant any wish.  The second route of the visual novel, titled Unlimited Blade Works, was adapted into a movie in 2010.  The important thing to note when comparing the movie and the light novel is that the movie was made with the assumption that the viewer has some knowledge of the plot. The consequences of such a constraint on a source material can be heavy. The Unlimited Blade Works visual  in particular, had a deep philosophical message about how Gilgamesh, a warrior who could use all Noble Phantasms(powerful, ancient weapons) would never be able to defeat Emiya Shirou, a master of one specific weapon. Other fights in the visual novel too possess such philosophical backgrounds. The movie however, strips the plot of all thes

Classroom of the Elite's Adaptation(2017) of the Light Novel(2015)

Hey guys, I welcome you all to my blog. I am writing this blog as part of my Cinematic Adaptation assignment, and I will be writing about one of my favorite Anime (Adaptation of a Light Novel) and talk about it in terms of this course.   Let's first discuss fidelity. After watching three episodes and reading an overwhelming 264 pages of the Novel, I would say that the Anime is not entirely loyal to the Novel; for example, Ayanokouji's (protagonist) personality was showed and described differently. In the Novel, Ayanokouji was portrayed as more of an ordinary guy. I'm saying this based on actions like smiling, desperate efforts in making friends, and wiping palms on pants before shaking hands with Kushida. On the contrary, the Anime didn't show any such actions. The narrative position in the Novel was in the first person (Ayanokouji), but the Anime was in the third person view.  However, in certain ways, the Anime was loyal to the Novel; for example, few scenes li

- Group project for the course HSS F325 Cinematic Adaptation - Amogh Bharadwaj, Pranav Rakasi, Pavan Kumar Reddy, Yashaswi Yenugu and Sai Nikhil Tati. If the different facets of anime intrigue you and you want to dive deep into the analysis of different anime adaptations of games and light novels, this is the place for you. In particular, we will be zooming in on specific concepts in the field of cinematic adaptations. For instance, we will be looking at how loyally the anime follows the light novels or games. This is formally known as fidelity. Further, we will take certain examples of appropriation, in which an anime takes specific lore or story and weaves it into its own identity. We also have a case where an anime has many intertexts - it is an adaptation of a source that has many sources. Moreover, we will be noting some features such as plot, narrator, narrative-style, themes, time shifts and tone of the story, and see how these aspects change when looking at the anime and when
