Sword Art Online (Part 4)

So far, we have discussed various cinematic adaptation concepts like Fidelity, Appropriation, Focalization, and the Chronological Order of events in the SAO anime series. In this post, let's touch upon anime aesthetics and Intertextuality.

Different special effects such as different colors to depict different types of magic, darker shades to show evil, etc., were widely used in the anime and LN illustrations. Further, the non-diegetic music overlay, especially during the climax scenes, adds a final layer to the illusions. They help to channel an extra dose of emotions from the viewers.

Even the intros of the anime have a very catchy tune. Overall this presents a robust aesthetic presentation.



SAO series is based on a video game. Many expeditions or adventures in the series are based on myths and mythological characters. One of the side stories, Sword Art Online Calibur, that's present in both the anime and the LN, is the fight with the Greek god of lightning, Thor. In both the greek myths and SAO series, Thor uses the Mjolnir hammer, which can only be wielded by the worthy.

In the same expedition, Kirito and other members find the Holy Sword of Excalibur (legendary sword of King Arthur, attributed with magical powers). This is basically anachronism, that is things belonging to the past are being used in these stories/expeditions.

Similarly, various intertextuality instances where ideas were drawn from legends and myths worldwide are present in the SAO series. In fact, we can find this sort of intertextuality in almost all anime series. This touches upon the vary essence of animes, where the stories mainly try to fit Japenese Audience's fantasies.

Overall, SAO is a phenomenal and super exciting series full of adventures and romance. This was later adapted as an actual video game and has been in high demand for quite some time.
