Anime Adaptations of Light Novels and Games

Hey guys, In this post I will be covering episodes 9 to 13 in the anime and chapters 5 and 6 in the light novel.  On comparison through fidelity, the anime does not stay loyal as most of the contents in chapter 5 were not adapted into the anime. Also the interaction between Gilbert and the has been cut short which fails to convey a very deeper relationship between them. One of the major changes in the anime is the character of Cattleya. In the light novel she is younger than Violet and has a hyperactive behaviour. Whereas in the anime she does retain her flirtatious behaviour but is given the role of a mother figure. The coworker/younger sister role is then replaced by the introduction of Iris and Erika. After reading the entire light novel and watching the anime, the anime seems to be well structured in terms of the events because the novel gives an impression of a collection of short stories with violet just in them, whereas the anime puts these stories in order and gives us a linear

In this post, let's touch upon anime aesthetics and Intertextuality. Different special effects such as different colors to depict different types of magic, darker shades to show evil, etc., were widely used in the anime and LN illustrations. Further, the non-diegetic music overlay , especially during the climax scenes, adds a final layer to the illusions. They help to channel an extra dose of emotions from the viewers. Even the intros of the anime have a very catchy tune . Overall this presents a robust aesthetic presentation. SAO series is based on a video game. Many expeditions or adventures in the series are based on myths and mythological characters . In this fourth blog, I shall be focusing on what makes anime, anime! Many of them know them by the name of OPs and EDs or Openings and Endings. These are some of the elements which other media don't have, and as an anime enthusiast, I am proud and happy to talk about these that are made with special care and consideration and are the major constituents of beauty in this art form.  Hey guys, Welcome to my fourth blog. Here we are going to conclude the anime i.e we are going to discuss from episode 7 to 12. Volume 3 of the Novel has covered these episodes. Again Let's start our discussion with fidelity. I would like to say that the Anime has done a very good job to cover all the things from this Volume. This is evident as we can see, it took 6 episodes to cover a single volume whereas, the first 6 episodes took 2 whole volumes. But there was a big change in episode 7, this episode was nowhere in the Novel(Yes the whole episode was missing). After searching from where they took this episode I found that it was taken from a later volume which was volume 4.5. This episode was just a filler so it didn't affect the storyline that much, but there were major changes in this episode compared with Volume 4.5, so we can say that the Anime was not quite loyal to this Volume. After episode 7 from 8 to 12 the Anime was, I would like to say, almost exact with the Novel

In this finale of the Unlimited Blade Works series, I renew hope in you readers, for this light novel was adapted into an anime by the reputed studio, Ufotable. You will not be disappointed. The anime not only utilised its potential to accommodate the philosophy behind Unlimited Blade Works' fiery fights, but it enhanced them as well. Unlimited Blade Works' core message is conquering oneself, evidently driven home by the dialogue between Emiya Shirou and Archer(who is Emiya Shirou from a different timeline). Archer despises who he became and aimed to prevent Emiya from becoming him by eliminating him. It was upto Emiya to prove Archer wrong. This was not done justice in the movie.  Who said animation can only make fights better? In my previous articles, we looked at how the Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works route was unjustly adapted into a movie. Here, we talk about the main cinematic aspect which the Fate series revolves upon - intertexuality. As mentioned earlier, the Servants in Fate are all characters of mythologies from all around the world, in a present-day setting. It is an anachronism . In fact, so are their weapons. Let's take a look. 1.Cú Chulainn and Gae Bolg In Unlimited Blade Works this is a weapon used by the Servant of class Lancer,  Cú Chulainn . It is based on a weapon, Gae Bulg of Irish mythology. In both the myth and the light novel, it is a weapon which always lands a mortal wound on its victim, however the movie, in its endeavour of enhancing visual beauty discussed in the last blog, appropriated this weapon to make it look a bit more flashy. In this blog, I will be discussing the second episode of Overlord that covers the second chapter, intermission and a part of the third chapter. The second episode contains many elements that will be used and referenced in future volumes and episodes thus making it a very important one. There's nothing much to discuss in the second chapter as it is primarily a dialogue between guardians and Ainz's insecurity of the guardians being disloyal and fearing for his life. He calls for a gathering of Guardians to satiate his fear and curiosity about the now live non-player characters. Although there isn't much to discuss, one must note how realistic Ainz's mind was as an undead- the inquisitiveness, the ability to keep his cool, take rational countermeasures and act accordingly.   Hey guys, In this post I will be talking about episodes 4 to 8 and chapters 3 and 4 from the anime and the light novel of Violet Evergarden respectively. As I mentioned in the previous post that the novel and it's adaptation differ in the sequence of events, I will briefly talk about the events mentioned in the previous post (from the novel) which occur in the anime between episodes 4 to 8. The anime shows the interaction between the playwright Oscar and the Auto memories doll Violet Evergarden. The anime explains the trauma that Oscar had faced with a lot of detail. It also showed the strong bond he had with his wife and his daughter and also describes a few events between them. One of the events that the anime missed which was crucial in my opinion is when Violet dresses up like his daughter which sends Oscar into an emotional rollercoaster. As a follow-up to the previous posts where we discussed Fidelity, Appropriation, and Focalization, let's discuss the  Chronological order  of events in Light Novel(LN) and the Anime Adaptation and on the  artwork  involved. One of the critical differences between anime and LN is the chronological order in which the events occur. For example, the  LN sometimes   goes back to past instances and recaps  the reader, that is analeptic account of the past events, unlike the anime, where the events occur sequentially. This is sometimes frustrating to keep track off. Also, there are a lot of  side stories in LNs  compared to the OVAs of Anime. The side stories usually  fill in the times between the main arcs , whereas in the anime adaptations, these are just depicted as flashbacks or are entirely avoided. Coming to the artwork, the original drawings, illustrated by abec, were  brilliantly showcased  in the anime adaptation.  The artworks are simply gorgeous, they   make me and many others

In the previous post , we discussed concepts such as Focalization and Appropriation. In this post, let's discuss the Fidelity of the Anime Adaptation of Sword Art Online Light Novel (LN) Series.  For the most part, Anime is loyal to the LN . Most of the episodes closely follow the novel. Amongst the few minor differences , scenes like Kirito's Excursion with Knights of Blood having a fourth character in the LN (excluded in the Anime), and scenes following the Gleaming Eyes battle have some tweaks in the Anime. These were mainly done to fit the time restrictions . A considerable amount of lines and phrases were cut. Although both the Light Novel and its anime adaptation have a similar plot , the Light Novel went into a lot more depth into the MMORPG world's aspects, whereas the Anime is more of a fantasy series. Further, LN does a better job of showing Asuna's strengths as a fighter and her stubbornness, compared to the Anime where she comes off as a really fluffy heroi

This will be a follow-up to my previous post where we summarised the difference between the differences between the Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works light novel and the movie. The movie tries to put the light novel into a 1 hour 45 minute nutshell. As one could expect, this wouldn't end up satisfactory. The movie glides through the explanation of the theme (which is the Holy Grail War) too briefly to be understood. We also see the movie shabbily jumping to scenes, making the viewer have to guess the context for themselves. Is it possible for an over-shortened adaptation to cover both the message and the complete entertainment of its source? It depends on what percentage of the source material contributes to these two aspects. In the case of the Fate Stay Night UBW light novel, there are very few scenes which are not relevant to the development of the story.
